Throwing with Porcelain

Porcelain pottery is incredibly beautiful when thrown on the potter’s wheel. It also can be very challenging to throw on first attempts. In fact it almost seems like a totally different material than traditional stoneware clays. In this class we will demonstrate techniques to make the process easier. The instruction should be considered an introduction and students will not be required to throw porcelain the entire semester.

This class requires previous clay experience with the wheel at the Midland Center for the Arts. Any exceptions must be approved by the instructor prior to registration. You may not enroll without previous wheel experience.

Clay must be purchased from the instructor.

“The Art and Skill of Drawing” is a 4-part, 48-week series of classes (four terms) designed with the beginner in mind, but intermediate drawing students will get a lot of new information as well. This is an essential class for those who want to draw and is a great starting point for those who would like to move into other media such as painting, photography, sculpture and digital art.

Learn the art of observation, the first component in learning how to draw, and be introduced to drawing fundamentals: line, shape, volume, proportion, space, shading, value and sight measuring. These techniques will be applied to black-and-white media with primary concentration on graphite.

The Art and Skill of Drawing I is open to beginning and intermediate students. All students will receive individual instruction, no matter what their level.

Ceramic Hand Building

Are you new to the world of pottery? Are you a potter in love with hand building? This is the class for you! The teacher will explore the three major hand building methods: pinch pot, coil and slab using a project-based approach. Students will also be introduced to the extruder and tile making. Hand-building helps students to understand the properties of clay and learn skills all potters need. The projects demonstrated will allow students to explore the capabilities of clay for functional work as well as its potential as an artistic medium. It will also allow experienced potters to build upon the projects introduced or to pursue their own work with support from the teacher.

All students will be expected to purchase clay from the instructor.

Photography to the Next Level

Join Huntington Witherill for a weekend workshop designed to inspire and expand your creative journey as a fine art photographer. With a focus toward helping participants to further develop and enhance their own personal photographic style, this workshop will explore a variety of strategies for improving your photography skills, as well as your creative vision.

The workshop is designed for intermediate to advanced photographers and is appropriate for all camera formats and approaches. Through multi-media presentations, lectures and group discussions, a field session, and constructive print critiques, this weekend workshop will endeavor to inspire participants to further cultivate their personal approach to both craft and vision through recognition and exploration of a number of practical issues related to the aesthetics of photography.

Students enrolled will have the opportunity to exhibit a photo from the workshop in Spring 2020 at the Midland Center for the Arts in the Little Theatre Lobby. Exhibit curated by Huntington Witherill.

Workshop is generously sponsored by the S. Preston Jones Photographic Endowment.

What to Bring to the Workshop:
• Participants should bring whatever camera gear they normally use.
• It is recommended that you also bring a tripod so that, during the field session, should you wish to have personalized instruction and/or interaction about specific composition and visualization considerations – working from a tripod will allow others (to include the instructor) to look through your camera to see exactly what it is that you are seeing and photographing, for purposes of discussion.
• If you wish to do so, please bring whatever materials you normally use for taking notes during lectures and presentations – i.e.- paper and writing materials, etc. (Please note: audio recording is fine but please, no video recording.)
• Please bring a total of no more than ten (10) finished prints of your own photographs for purposes of discussion and print critiques. If you have images that you are having specific problems with, don’t hesitate to bring those prints, as well. (The actual number of each participant’s prints that will be viewed and discussed during the print critique sessions will depend upon the total number of participants, and any inherent time constraints.)
• Finally – and most importantly – please bring an open mind and the desire to have a fun and inspiring weekend!

This Workshop Meets for Three Days at These Times:

Saturday, October 5, 2019 | 9 AM – 5 PM
