Plein Air: Art in the Garden
In this nine-week course you will work in the Dow Gardens experiencing the beauty of nature while transferring your feelings and observations to canvas or paper. Students choose their own medium as they study light and its relationship to form, atmosphere, color and mood. Individual attention and instruction provided. Students are encouraged to bring a camera to take photographs, for use in case of rain and as a reference. The galleries will be used on rainy days and for critiques. Admission to Dow Gardens is included in the class price.

Summer Critique
This class has proven so popular that this year we are running a summer session. Artists will explore their individual genre of work using the media of their choice. The class will meet for one and a half hours each week for discussions, questions on work in progress and designing new strategies for conceptual expression.

On the last class August 5 you will have the opportunity to bring two works for review there will also be a guest artist or art-related professional invited to participate in the review.

Interim Drawing
This drawing class is for students who want to keep drawing between the Art and Skill of Drawing 3 and the fall session of Art and Skill of Drawing 4. We will meet every other week for 12 week (6 weeks of class time) for one and a half hours. We will use this time to review your work and start on new projects. Most of the work will be done at home at your leisure. Students who have knowledge of drawing who are not in the Art and Skill classes are welcome to come and draw as well.

Digital Photography on the Move
This class will take place over twelve (12) weeks. There will be six three-hour class sessions during the twelve weeks. Each class will consist of taking pictures outdoors in the Midland area with an emphasis on a particular location. Locations will include: the Dow Gardens, Chippewa Nature Center, downtown Midland. There will be a field trip to photograph an area of urban/industrial decay. Digital and film cameras may be used. A working knowledge of your camera and a tripod are strongly recommended. Classes will include critique of photos taken. The goal of this class is to give students an expanded perspective of subjects. Classes will meet early mornings and late afternoons for lighting considerations. Call me at 989/550-1437 if you have questions.

Tasty Tales, Legends, and Folklore of Michigan
Parents, introduce your preschooler to Michigan’s tall tales, legends, and folklore with our mini -camp series. Centered on Ceramics

Express yourself through photographs! Learn the fundamentals of digital photography. Further your experience using a digital camera while taking photos at surrounding points of interest, such as Dow Gardens. Fundamentals of photographic composition and design will be taught. Drawing Anime
Anime, in addition to manga (Japanese comics), is extremely popular in Japan and well known throughout the world. Anime is commonly referred to as an art form. As a visual medium, it naturally places a large emphasis on visual styles. The styles can vary from artist to artist or by studio to studio. While different titles and different artists have their own artistic styles, many stylistic elements have become so common such that they are described as being definitive of anime in general. Learn the basic drawing guidelines of Anime’s visual characteristics, terminology, character design, and some animation technique.

Join local poet and professor, Larry Levy, on a journey through the world of poetry. You will explore your creative and expressive sides in this camp. Open Ceramics
In this intermediate eight week summer class you will work on your own projects with tutelage from your instructor. Whether you wish to construct your projects by means of sculpture, hand building (using pinch, coil, model, or slab work) or by throwing on the potter’s wheel, individual instruction and demonstrations will be available during your class time.

Drawing Anime
Anime, in addition to manga (Japanese comics), is extremely popular in Japan and well known throughout the world. Anime is commonly referred to as an art form. As a visual medium, it naturally places a large emphasis on visual styles. The styles can vary from artist to artist or by studio to studio. While different titles and different artists have their own artistic styles, many stylistic elements have become so common such that they are described as being definitive of anime in general. Learn the basic drawing guidelines of Anime’s visual characteristics, terminology, character design, and some animation technique.

Flute Ensemble
Broaden your flute and musical skills by participation in a flute ensemble. Have fun playing 3-4 part repertoire while also trying the piccolo, alto and bass flutes. Intro to iPhoneography
Learn how to maximize the built-in camera functions and manage some of the most powerful iPhoneography apps out there. Gain an understanding of basic photography concepts. Learn about shooting and editing apps (free apps and those requiring a minimal investment, like .99 – $4.99), how they work and examples of before/after images utilizing them. If you want to just take snap shots and load them on your computer, use your iPhone as a digital sketch book or want to make serous art, this is the class for you.

Day one see examples of “iPhoneography,” learn about apps, how to download them and of course taking pictures with your smart phone.

Day two will start with a review and discussion of your assignment images and favorite app, any lingering questions about using the iPhone camera, etc and on to sharing your images with others via email and other outlets like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Mix More Media! Innovations in Acrylics
All About the Process! One day workshop with Golden Certified Working Artist, Valerie Allen.

Tactile, patina, fresco….all these words describe an aesthetic that many painters and mixed media artists gravitate towards. Add to your artistic vocabulary by experiencing a hands-on approach to creating textures and unique effects using the newest additions to the Golden Artist’s Colors collection. Materials such as Glass Bead Gel, Fiber Paste, and Crackle Paste will be provided for your explorations. Valerie will introduce you to the collage artist’s “go to” product, Digital Ground and you will also work with “Open” Acrylics –the paint that dries slower, blends longer and expands the boundaries of acrylic painting! Encaustic Workshop
This workshop will cover the fundamentals of encaustic painting. Encaustic is a beautiful and versatile approach to painting utilizing a hot wax based paint in liquid form and in-situ manipulation.

Day One:Students will learn techniques for working with encaustic and to make their own encaustic medium. The medium can be used for encapsulation, modifying paint, glazing and making your own encaustic paint. Students will experiment with 3 panels to explore different strategies for painting in encaustic including in-situ manipulation, collage/encapsulation and representational imagery in encaustic.

Day Two: Students will bring together the concepts introduced on day one to execute a larger encaustic panel and encaustic mono-prints.

Day Three: Further explore encaustics, with instructor’s guidance.

If you have taken this class before Day 2 and 3 will be varied enough to learn new techniques and information.

Students with previous encaustic experience may choose to register for only Days 2 and 3. Some supplies will be included, some can be purchased from the instructor and some will need to be purchased from a supply list that will be sent to you prior to the workshop.
