History Girls B (8-11)

What does it mean to be a girl when the world around you is changing dramatically every day? American Girl characters take it all in stride! Join us for an unforgettable week exploring their changing lives through crafts, games, stories, food, and explore the role historical events play in their lives. Experience Native American life with Kaya, the War of 1812 on Lake Ontario with Caroline, Hispanic culture of early New Mexico with Josefina, explore friendship and hardship with Cecile and Marie Grace in New Orleans in 1853, and challenges of a Jewish immigrant life with Rebecca in New York City in the early 1900s.

Musical Explorers: Band (8-11)

So many choices! Strings, brass, woodwind, percussion and non-orchestral instruments; spend a day with members of each of these instrument groups to see which is the best fit for you. This class is meant for students who are getting ready to select an instrument to play. This program allows for a longer and more involved opportunity to experiment and learn about the choices they have by spending three hours with each of the primary instrument groups.

Instruments generously on loan from Herter Music Center and introduced by guest instructors who specialize in these areas.

Drawing Anime (11-14)

Anime, in addition to manga (Japanese comics), is extremely popular in Japan and well known throughout the world. Anime is commonly referred to as an art form. As a visual medium, it naturally places a large emphasis on visual styles. The styles can vary from artist to artist or studio to studio. While different titles and different artists have their own artistic styles, many stylistic elements have become so common such that they are described as being definitive of anime in general. Learn the basic drawing guidelines of Anime’s visual characteristics, terminology, character design, and some animation technique.

Not your typical portrait or cartooning class! Capture the personality of your subject by creating exaggerated facial features atop simple bodies for a humorous effect.

Science Explorers (6-8)

Explore the basic concepts of the sciences such as chemistry, physics, astronomy, geology and biology. In the process learn how they were discovered, and what it would be like to work in that field. Have fun making and using your own scientific instruments. Make things disappear and then reappear again, race your ‘hot wheels’ cars, make a sundial, grow crystals and see all the beautiful and scary things found in a drop of pond water.

Creative Digital Photo (13-18)

Get to know your digital camera! This class acquaints budding photographers with basic concepts and skills of digital photography. Included are shutter speed, aperture, depth of field, contrast, metering, lighting, and composition. This class will be active with opportunities to view the world in new artistic ways.
