End of Term Critique

Join Armin Mersmann, MCFTA Artist in Residence, for this unique opportunity to discuss your art – as well as the art of others – in a supportive environment. Presented works must be created during a fall 2014 MCFTA class, with artwork limited to one per person. This is a social gathering open to students, faculty and friends, whether presenting work or not.

Held in the Saints & Sinners Lounge inside Midland Center for the Arts, admission is FREE with a cash bar and light refreshments available.

Intermediate Acrylic Painting

This class is for the painter who knows the basics of painting but wants to learn more. Self-expression, motivation and exploration in painting is stressed. Diversity of personalities, styles and techniques are what makes this painting class a must for the developing and intermediate artist.

Abstract Painting

Abstract art is a style of painting where color and form make up the subject of the painting rather than a representation of tangible objects or people. This class is a combination of technique and art history with emphasis on composition, color theory, and basic art elements used to create a work of art that expresses the statement the artist wants to make.

Black & White Film Photography

Film is ALIVE! Black & White Film Photography

Explore basic photography principles such as focus, exposure and composition from behind the lens of a FILM camera and learn to work independently in our darkroom. Film has the advantage creating very high resolution images with elegant simplicity. Students must have a manual 35mm or larger camera, a tripod and a manual for their camera. A limited number of loaner cameras are available. Class fee includes 2 rolls of 24 exposure black and white film and 25 sheets of 8”x10” printing paper.

No digital or smart phones; film cameras only.

Advanced Critique

Artists explore their individual genre of work using the media of their choice. The class will meet for one and a half hours each week for discussions, questions on work in progress and designing new strategies for conceptual expansion. There will be two formal critiques in this course; each will last three hours, one in the middle of the term one the last day. The artists will have the opportunity to bring two works for review. The last critique will consist of a locally well-known artist or art-related professional invited to participate in the review. This nine-week course is open to intermediate and advanced artists only.

Intermediate Ceramics

Fine-tune your skills and build on your existing knowledge of ceramics. Whether you choose hand building, slab construction or wheel throwing, explore ways to improve techniques and create carefully constructed pieces. Work on your own projects with guidance from the instructor as needed. Various intermediate techniques/concepts/projects will be demonstrated during the semester. Want a challenge? Project assignments will be given upon request. Group critiques will be held periodically. The studio will be available for working independently outside of class time.

Materials fee: Clay needs to be purchased from the instructor for $35, porcelain for $45.

This class is a way to grow your water media experience. Work in the studios and delve deeper into this medium through exploration of advanced water media techniques, interaction with fellow students and participating in dynamic critiques.

Wide Open Eyes: Creative Photo

Photographers of all experience levels will explore the technical capabilities of their cameras while learning to ‘see’ as photographers. Practice challenging techniques in camera and post-production editing. Experiment with alternative hotographic processes, darkroom techniques and digital printing. Through critique you will learn to recognize a strong photograph and print. Required equipment: camera, tripod and a notebook.

Jewelry Fabrication

Hand-fabricated jewelry offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the versatility and endless possibilities of manipulating precious metals and gemstones into objects of adornment. Soldering and the use of a jewelers saw are among two of the fundamental jewelry manufacturing techniques students will become proficient at when working in gold or silver. Students will also learn essential geological information about gemstones and how they should be cared for during the manufacturing process. All raw materials will have to be purchased by the student at an extra cost.

The Art and Skill of Painting II is a continuation of the Art and Skill of Painting series.

Join us and stretch your artistic ability to paint images both real and imagined. Reach beyond what is known and familiar to you. Open studio times are provided when classrooms are not in use.

You do not have to have taken The Art and Skill of Painting I to be able to take this section, but some rudimentary painting skills are required.
