Baby Harmony/Toddler Tunes

A class for Babies and Toddlers (6 months – 3 years) and their caretakers.

A wonderful musical beginning includes singing, rocking, finger games and lots of rhythm play. In class you will experience and share: movement and rhythm, activity songs for body awareness, songs to sing (fun, silly, and lullabies), playing small percussion instruments, keyboard games, activities and manipulatives (hoops, streamers, balls, etc.), listening activities (quiet and active).

A punch-card allows 6 Saturday class sessions to fit your schedule; multiple cards may be purchased or sessions may be purchased one-at-a time to attend the sessions that fit your schedule. Please purchase your punchcard via the MCFTA Ticket Office.

Harmony Road 1 (4.5-6)

For ages 4.5 – 6.

The Harmony Road course is carefully constructed for children to learn the basic building blocks of music. Emphasis is on ear training, solfege singing, keyboard playing, ensemble and rhythm activities, movement and music creativity. This exceptional course gives the student “inner hearing,” which makes transposing, improvisation and composing easily accessible in their musical studies. Parent involvement in class and at home required.The program cost includes a course book.

There will be no class on April 1 due to Spring Break; any other scheduled days off will be distributed at the beginning of the semester by the instructor.

Hello Music (3-5)

For ages 3 – 5

Say “Hello Music” with your preschooler in this introductory music class. Learn the fundamentals of notation, rhythm, and piano geography, while exploring a variety of songs, instruments and movement activity. The price includes the cost of a course book.

Any other scheduled days off will be distributed at the beginning of the semester by the instructor.

Toddler Tunes

Advanced Critique

Artists explore their individual genre of work using the media of their choice. The class meets for 90 minutes each week for discussions, questions on works-in-progress and designing new strategies for conceptual expansion. There will be two formal critiques in this course, each lasting three hours: one in the
middle of the term, and one the final day. The artists will have the opportunity to bring two works for review. The final critique will consist of a locally well-known artist or art-related professional invited to participate in the review.

This 9-week course is open to intermediate and advanced artists only.

Beginning Ceramics

Students who are new to ceramics AND those who have had an introduction but still wish to work on basic skills, will explore the three functional forms in pottery – the cylinder, the bowl, and the plate — in both hand building and on the wheel. Through projects student will be able to use all the handbuild-ing methods and the wheel to make functional and fun pieces as they develop and strengthen their pottery skills. Tools will be provided but each student is expected to purchase one bag of wheatstone for $40 when they come to the first class.

Begin/Intermediate Water Media

This class is for beginning and intermediate students who wish to explore the creative possibilities of water-media. Students will be encouraged to express themselves as they develop skills in using watercolors, acrylics and other water-based media. They will learn techniques unique to each medium and will develop skills in color mixing, brush handling, and composition. Class time will include instructor demonstrations as well time for each student to practice technique and develop individual style as they receive individual attention.

Jewelry Fabrication

Hand-fabricated jewelry offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the versatility and endless possibilities of manipulating precious metals and gemstones into objects of adornment. Soldering and the use of a jeweler’s saw are among two of the fundamental jewelry manufacturing techniques students will become proficient at when working in gold or silver. Students will also learn essential geological information about gemstones and how they should be cared for during the manufacturing process. All raw materials must be purchased by the student at an extra cost.

Keyboard Musician 1 (9-11)

For ages 9 – 11.

The Keyboard Musician courses are for students who have completed Harmony Road Book 4, Young Musician Book 4, or Keyboard Prep Book 3. Students continue to develop performance skills through the study of varied repertoire styles, technical studies, sight-reading songs and three and four part ensembles. Ear training is expanded to include dictation, recognition of tonal centers and chord progressions. Transposing becomes an easily accessible activity. Students learn to accompany themselves while singing solfege. Two part singing and artistic repertoire encourage expressive musicianship. Harmonic training develops an understanding of accompaniment styles. Students are given step-by-step techniques to develop their own creativity through music composition. In this program, students become acquainted with major composers and their place in music history. The program cost does include a course book.
