Fused Glass (Adult)

Fused Glass for Beginners

Learn fundamentals of fusing glass while creating your own artwork! Each student will create one 5- to 6-inch tile and 2 small jewelry pieces. Finished work will be ready for pick-up the following week at The Center. No experience necessary. Safety glasses will be provided; bring an apron or smock if desired. Long pants &
comfortable closed-toe shoes should be worn.

*Material fee of $25 must be paid to the instructor, cash preferred.

This workshop takes place off-site at instructor’s unheated, non-air conditioned studio/garage. Please dress appropriately for the weather! Please make sure that the Ticket Office has a valid email on file for you as driving directions will be emailed to you the week of the workshop.

Plein Air (Adult)

In this nine-week course you will work in the Dow Gardens experiencing the beauty of nature while transferring your feelings and observations to canvas or paper. Students choose their own medium as they study light and its relationship to form, atmosphere, color and mood. Individual attention and instruction provided. Students are encouraged to bring a camera to take photographs to use as a reference in case of rain. The galleries will be used on rainy days and for critiques.

Admission to Dow Gardens is included in the class price.

B & W Film Photography (Adult)

Explore basic photography principles such as focus, exposure and composition from behind the lens of a FILM camera and learn to work independently in our darkroom!

Film has the advantage of creating very high resolution images with elegant simplicity. Students must have a manual 35mm or larger camera, a tripod and a manual for their camera. A limited number of loaner cameras are available, but please state need for one when registering.

This is a FREE class with a starter supply fee of $55, which includes classroom developing chemicals, 2 rolls of 24-exposure black-and-white film and up to 25 sheets of 5×7 printing paper. Students are responsible for purchasing additional supplies, if needed.

Begin/Inter Watercolor (Adult)

This class is for students who are new to watercolor and for those who wish to refresh their skills. During this course, students will explore the tools, techniques and skills necessary for successful watercolor painting. They will learn what surfaces to use, the importance of brush handling and a wide variety of application techniques. They will learn how planning and the art of design play an important role in successful water color painting as they develop skills in color mixing and experience the versatility of the medium.

Summer Interim Jewelry (Adult)

Keep creating jewelry during the summer with studio access. Open to students who have previously taken lost-wax casting or jewelry fabrication classes who would like to work on their own projects this summer.

Classes meets on 6/13, 6/27, 7/11,7/25, 8/8 and 8/22. You will also access to the studio when the building is open and the studio is not in use for enrollees to work on their projects outside of class time.

Independent Ceramics (Adult)

Intermediate & advanced students who have achieved a self-sufficient working level in ceramics will work independently to achieve goals set with the instructor. The instructor will meet with students advising on an “as needed” basis. You will be provided with a key card to work in the studio when The Center is open and there are no other classes in progress. Clay will need to be purchased at the Ticket Office and picked up through the instructor during class time.

Ceramic Workshop (Adult)

Working side-by-side Gail and Robert will each create one of their signature hand-built sculptures while presenting a ceramic workshop that includes various design techniques and aesthetic considerations along with technical information about surface finishes and firing techniques. Their personal strengths are continuously directed to enhancing the design skills of participants at every stage of the building process.

During this workshop attendees will also participate in individual, hands-on, work source activities directed at increasing the visual worth of their artwork while nurturing a reconnection to those passions that inspire more innovative approaches to the creative expressions important to work and living.

Experience the “Wizarding World” by participating in mini-classes such as Potions (chemistry), Herbology (plants), Care of Magical Creatures (animals/habitats and creativity) and Astronomy/Astrology. Stage Struck Act 1 (6-7)

On Monday you will get your very own role in the classic folktale, “Mother Goose and Her Pig!” Each class is designed to make your character come to life through learning how to use your voice, how to move on stage, and how costumes and makeup help you perform on the Little Theater stage for family and friends on Friday, June 22.
