SCIENCE AND ART TOURS

• ALDEN B. DOW MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & ART
Please read our Procedures for Scheduling and Planning School Tours (41 kb) packet. If you have additional questions, please contact our Education Department at museumtours@mcfta.org. Two weeks notice may be required to qualify for any special tour rates.

For ease of scheduling, please complete our Tour Planning Worksheet (24 kb) prior to attempting to make reservations.

Online Reservations To check our calendar of available dates and times, visit our online tour reservations. Once you complete your online request, you will be contacted for additional details.

Current Rates for School Tours:

$3 per student; classroom teachers are FREE; $3 per adult chaperone. 
*These rates apply to public and private schools only. Homeschoolers, scout groups and others, please see our FAQ sheet section for rates. Rates subject to change.

Pre-registration is required for all school tours.
Two weeks notice may be required to qualify for any special tour rates. If you have additional questions, or to inquire about available times and dates for your tour, please contact our Education Department at museumtours@mcfta.org.

Required Minimum Number of Chaperones - by age group:
Preschool-4th grade   1 for every 5 students
5th-9th grade    1 for every 10 students
10th-12th grade   1 for every 15 students

Curator of Education reserves the right to increase the minimum number of chaperones for a group; each group will be evaluated on a case by case basis (e.g. special needs groups, juvenile detention groups etc.)

SCHOOL TRANSPORATION GRANTS 2012-13
For the 2012-13 school year, we will again be able to provide limited transportation assistance to educational groups visiting the Alden B. Dow Museum exhibits. Please fill in and submit the following application form for consideration.

HISTORICAL TOURS

• MIDLAND COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Touching Tour
Preschool and Kindergarten

Children are given the rare opportunity to experience a Victorian Home museum through the sense of touch. Guides will take the students through the Bradley Home, allowing them to touch and handle many of the antique objects within.

Root Cellar & Ice Box
Grade 2

Students get a glimpse at the wants and needs of children in 1880. Full of hands-on activities, students visit the Bradley Home and the Homestead Farm at the Chippewa Nature Center. Through the experience of these two locations, students can compare and contrast city and country life. Call CNC to schedule at (989) 631-0830.

Historic Community
Grade 3

Explore the lives of three people who lived in our community long ago. Through activities, songs and movement, students will learn about lumberjacks, blacksmiths and domestic servants from Midland’s historic community.

Chemist & Architect
Grade 4

Featuring the lives of Herbert H. Dow and his son Alden B. Dow, this tour has a strong economic component. Activities include a resource treasure hunt, home design, chemistry experiment and tours of the Herbert H. Dow Historical Museum and the Alden B. Dow Home and Studio. In addition to economic lessons about resources and entrepreneurship, students learn how these men influenced Michigan history.

Holiday Tours
Any Grade

The holiday season as we celebrate it today has its roots in the Victorian period. Come see the Bradley Home decked out in Victorian splendor with live greens and handmade ornaments. Learn about the festive traditions that made this time of the year special. Holiday tours are available during the month of December. Tour availability is limited, so call early. Hands-on craft activities are included. $3 per child.

High School Tours
Grades 9-12

This 90-minute tour is ideal for humanities and history classes, but can be customized to meet the needs of others. In the Herbert H. Dow Historical Museum, students will be exposed to the history of The Dow Chemical Company and its influence on Midland.Comparisons are made between Herbert Dow and other entrepreneurs of his time. In the Bradley Home, along with learning the history of the family and the home, design and architecture elements are featured.

Activities for all divisions can be custom tailored to better benefit each age group. Call with your ideas. Included are self-guided tours, scavenger hunts and badge activities. During special exhibitions (past examples: Egypt, A T Rex Named Sue, Grossology, etc.) the museum may offer a specialty patch with the tour. OUTREACH PROGRAMS

- VISUAL ARTS PROGRAM
Picture Parent Program: A long-standing success story designed and executed by over 100 active volunteers who take art history and appreciation to the classrooms of Midland schools.

Project Art Museum: Introduces elementary students to a half-day arts experience that includes a gallery tour, hands-on studio art, performing arts and science. Funded in part by the Maxwell K. Pribil Memorial Fund.

Visual Arts Outreach: This program sends artists in all disciplines to under served schools for demonstrations, presentations, hands-on art activities and career guidance.

SCIENCE OUTREACH PROGRAMS
Science Outreach Programs are educational, fun and entertaining. They can usually be tailored to the specific needs of your event. These programs may be available if you would like to add them to a museum tour for a small fee.

Grades 2-12

From the time of the Ojibway to today, this historical program shows the changing face of Midland. See the fascinating changes Midland has undergone while you hunt for history in today’s Midland.

Lumbering
Grade 4

Through the use of slides, artifacts and song, students learn about rough and tumble shanty life and the early lumbering trade in Midland.

World War II Posters Loan Kit
Grades 9-12

Bring original World War II posters and slides of posters to your classroom to help guide analysis and discussion.
