HISTORY – Who we are; what we do “Some of the time we create and some of the time we appreciate. Both are powerful and necessary forces in the development of a healthy community.”
- Alden B. Dow (1904 – 1983), Michigan Architect Laureate, philanthropist and Midland resident
Midland Center for the Arts originated when six local arts organizations joined forces in 1971 to address a growing community’s need for adequate performing, studio and museum space. With a facility designed by Alden B. Dow, MCFTA is a non-profit, public foundation that represents our six member groups. Activities at MCFTA are supported in part by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
Over the years, MCFTA has hosted world-class professional musicians and entertainment, including the Boston Pops, Norah Jones and Lyle Lovett, as well as critically acclaimed exhibitions such as The Nature of Diamonds, A T. rex Named Sue, Grossology and Timeless Warriors & Relics: 1500 Years of Ancient China.
VISION: Engaging people and changing lives by fusing entertainment, education and creativity.
MISSION: To entertain, educate and inspire a diverse and expanding regional audience in the arts, sciences and humanities. |
