"What Can a Woman Do?" Book Signing
Thursday, November 12
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Herbert D. Doan Midland County History Center Atrium
Admission: FREE
We are hosting a book-signing to celebrate the publishing of “What Can a Woman Do?” co-authored by local residents and historians Ella Marie Schroeder and Dorothy Langdon Yates. The story of the book is as interesting as its contents, and our good friends will share insights into the book’s origins and research.
“What Can a Woman Do?” is the story of a young female abolitionist in the Michigan Territory before statehood, and is based upon a collection of 1830s letters uncovered by Dorothy in the 1970s. She and Ellie have collaborated in their efforts to weave the letters’ contents into a fascinating story which captures the spirit, challenges, and dedication of Elizabeth Margaret Chandler and others who strived to bring justice to others during a most unjust era of our national heritage.
Because Chandler and her friends often discussed and promoted abolitionism at tea parties, we will be hosting the book-signing during an informal tea, serving tea cakes from Chandler’s own 1830s recipe. After a brief discussion of the book’s origins, both Ellie and Dorothy will be here to greet and visit, sign copies of the book, and answer questions. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
This event will be held on the same day and overlapping times as the Nov Fireside Chat --- we hope you’ll consider attending both enjoyable history.

You will be able to imagine yourself transported back in time in the warmth of the softly lit rooms and carols sung by the hearth.
