Genetics Specialist Explores Cancer and Family Links
Through careful examination of family history, cancer genetics
specialists can determine whether cancers in the family are
hereditary. During this year’s Elsa U. Pardee Lecture, Karmanos
Cancer Institute genetics counselor Nancie Petrucelli, M.S. will
update participants on family links to cancer.
She will discuss the genetic markers for cancer diagnoses that help
family members discover if cancer genes are inherited. The “red
flags” of inherited cancer, genetic testing and the impact of family
history will be demonstrated. Ms. Petrucelli will also talk about
options for prevention, early detection and treatment.
The Elsa U. Pardee Foundation, established in 1944, promotes
the control and cure of cancer. It has been instrumental in
developing the MidMichigan oncology program as well as
supporting this annual lecture.
‘Jonna’s Body, Please Hold’
It may seem ironic to include the words cancer and funny in the
same sentence, but Jonna’s Body, Please Hold is chronicled as
outrageously funny as it recounts Jonna Tamases’ real-life bouts
with cancer. The program takes the audience on a masterful
journey inside Jonna’s body, where a sassy receptionist fields calls
from a parade of quirky body parts. When two nasty killers invade,
it’s a fight for Jonna’s life.
After the shock of surviving cancer, Jonna began writing about
her experience. Her idea was to challenge the despair that so
often dominates works dealing with similar issues. Because of her
background in comedy writing and performing, a multi-character
format emerged.
